Finding Summer Sanity

It feels like summer snuck up on me again this year.  I knew it was coming, I signed my kids up for camps, I brought our swim towels and melamine serving platters out of storage, and reluctantly pulled out my shorts (and self-tanner).  Still, it hit me in the face with heat, kids that are already BORED (HOW??), and bugs.  The cicadas this summer have Joanne in a tailspin!  Hopefully we’ll see her outside in July.

But now I’m a few weeks into summer and I have made the transition.  Here’s my thoughts on summer home décor and vintage.

  • Give me hints of the salty sea air.  This summer, I am in love with all things beach.  An amazing piece of coral nestled next to your favorite stack of books, a quirky carved bird watching you lounge in the air conditioning, or a wicker serving tray with your favorite candle.  Even when it’s too hot to actually be outside, I can still enjoy hints of summer.
  • Bamboo, Wicker, and Rattan…yes please!  I’ll be honest…for Joanne and I, these are year-round staples, but a rattan end table or wicker plant stand just feels right in the sunshine!
  • Keep it Summer Simple.  I already mentioned my melamine platters, but I do appreciate entertaining al fresco.  In my house, I have a repurposed newspaper rack (a find from Warehouse55 many years ago) that hold lunchboxes and art projects during the school year, but it transitions to outdoor plates, bowls and platters during the summer for easy patio dinners.  Some homes keep serving ware tucked away, but I like to keep it handy.  Your friends will remember your yummy refreshments, but also how you’re ready for any impromptu get-together!

Enjoy these early summer days.
